Having already taken away former favourite Njabulo Blom from Kaizer Chiefs, it is thought St. Louis City coach Bradley Carnell will return to inflict more pain!
In January, Carnell raided his former club Chiefs for the services of Blom, who has excelled at St. Louis and now he is thought to be targeting Thabo Cele, an Amakhosi target!
Chiefs were initially interested in signing Cele after his starring performances for the SA U23 side at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago. That move did not materialise, however, with it being believed that it was ultimately the late call of then coach Stuart Baxter to not follow through with the club’s interest in Cele. The midfielder then eventually signed for current side Radomiak, who play in the top flight of Polish football. That did not appear to deter Chiefs from going back in to test the waters at the start of the season, but their offer to the club was apparently rebuffed by the club.
It is said that, the driving force for that second pursuit is now former Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane with Cele being a player who is thought to command huge admiration from him. That was evident when rumours came out that he encouraged the club’s eventually rejected bid to bring the player back to the country. But, now it looks like he is poised to return to South Africa but not for the Amakhosi.
Cele has returned to good effect to his home province KZN, having become a key player for Bafana Bafana in the COSAFA Cup. His efforts seem to have attracted the interest of Mamelodi Sundowns, as previously reported by this publication last week. But now the latest coming from The Citizen is that St. Louis are one of the players monitoring the player’s situation at Radomiak.
CELE TO SNUB CHIEFS FOR ST. LOUIS CITY?
“Thabo Cele attacked St Louis City from America and Al Ahly sporting director we had a three hour telephonic meeting regarding Thabo Cele who is currently playing Cosafa. The representatives of Thabo Cele have not yet agreed with any teams,” said a source to the publication.
Will Carnell hurt Chiefs for both their defensive midfielder and potential replacement in Cele?
