This is our Kaizer Chiefs signing of the day piece. Today we have a man who put the “L” in legend.

KAIZER CHIEFS SIGNING OF THE DAY: JOHN MOSHOEU

There’s no better way to describe him. He was simply one of the greatest footballers Mzansi has ever produced. He left the Amakhosi in 1993 before he was re-signed in 2002 to produce magic as a 36-year-old.

He was known as “Shoes,” which was a reference to ‘dancing shoes’ and coach Clive Barker’s famous moments of standing on the touchline to shout “Shoes! Dance! Dance Shoes, dance!”

The central midfielder/ number 10 was born in Ga Mashashane, Limpopo before growing up in Diepkloof, Soweto.

THE LONG CAREER

Moshoeu began his amateur football at Blue Whales before moving to Giant Blackpool and finally Chiefs in 1988. It was in 1993 when “Shoes” moved to make his name in Europe.

Turkey was the nation where he stayed for 10 years, earning legendary status at local giants Fenerbahce.

Mosheou returned to Mzansi to rejoin Chiefs before finishing his career at AmaZulu aged 43, which set a PSL record in 2008.

Additionally, Mosheou was a Bafana regular and jersey number 10 with 73 caps, including the AFCON 1996 gold medal and a leading role at the FIFA 1998 World Cup in France.

DEATH

Mosheou took his last breath at the Morningside Hospital following an extended fight against stomach cancer. He died at the age of 49 before he was laid to rest on 25 April in Randburg, 2015.

He grew up in Cape Town reading his mom’s Drum magazines and his father’s Kick Off and City Press weeklies. Siseko spends summers at his second hometown, Middelburg in the Eastern Cape. After studying journalism at Varsity College, he worked at Soccer Laduma for over three years before going international with Futaa for two years.
