Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena stands by his statement that Kaizer Chiefs have “‘historically been a very lucky team.”
Mokwena made the statement after Downs’s 2-1 league win against Chiefs at Loftus Stadium on August 9, where he said he cautioned his troops at half-time saying “Historically Kaizer Chiefs are a very lucky team.’”
Speaking ahead of the MTN8 clash between his team and Amakhosi on Saturday, the Soweto-born coach believes his MTN8 opponents were showered with luck by the man above.
MOKWENA CLAIMS HE WAS PAYING A COMPLIMENT TO CHIEFS
“I know somebody is waiting for a headline, somebody is waiting for a statement that they can misuse like this statement I made to say ‘Kaizer Chiefs is a very lucky team’, and people took that statement and they ran with it,” Mokwena said.
“I would hear what the people would say, I would read the story-lines when Pirates played Chiefs, when Swallows played Chiefs, and how many games you just saw God’s divine hand following Kaizer Chiefs.

“And I can tell you with 100% certainty that as a kid growing up in Orlando West I experienced so many games of Pirates against Chiefs. And I would understand the feeling people when Chiefs won,” he said.
Mokwena told the media that his statement should not be taken the wrong way as he was complimenting Kaizer Chiefs.
“I would understand the feeling of how many games [where] you just saw God’s divine hands falling upon Kaizer Chiefs. and it is very true, God must be a Kaizer Chiefs supporter,” he said.
